The Commuter
The Commuter is the classic What-If novel, a quirky thriller with a dark sense of humor about Barnaby Gilbert, a nebbishy time-and-motion expert who loses his job in the era of computer “solutions” and finds himself with a generous severance but nothing to do. On the advice of his boss, he takes up a hobby. Actually a second one. An enthusiastic birder, he decides to follow people he’s been riding on the train with for years from his rivertown home to New York City to see where they go and what they do. He figures it will be a lot like bird watching. But stalking humans proves to be a much more dangerous game than tracking the eagles and blue heron that populate the banks of Hudson, the river view from his house.
Before he knows it, he is in the midst of counterfeit goods criminals, Chinese spies, Ukrainian hackers, a knife-wielding teenage hooker named Pandora, a dominatrix and a rather bent FBI agent who doesn’t care if Barnaby lives or dies as long as he can use him. A prize-winning comic thriller.
